How could a major inclusive mobility provider better understand its customer base and prepare for the future?
CONTEXT
In order to identify the priorities for Motability’s research agenda, a scoping study was undertaken to achieve three key objectives:
1 – Understand the ‘lived experience’ of managing mobility today/
2 – Identify the future research priorities that Motability customers and other key stakeholders feel justify further investigation.
3 – Validate whether a car club scheme would be a valuable addition to the mobility service.

METHOD
The scoping study was undertaken with key stakeholders in order to co-design the study with those who were experts by experience.
The study focused on gathering and prioritising the views and insights of the full range of stakeholders including Motability customers & ex-customers, industry professionals, expert mobility researchers, carers, mobility assessors, Motability governors.

OUTCOME
The project aimed to explore the current and
future mobility needs of people with disabilities.
Participants’ experiences centred on the lived
experience and the challenges associated with everyday mobility. A set of values and requirements were identified under the topics of:
- Stakeholde Values
- Inclusivity
- Usability
- Equipment & Facilities
- Finance
- Trust, Support & Service
